What is a Pomchi?

A Pomchi is a cross breed between the popular Chihuahua and the Pomeranian. A Pomchi (also called a Chipom or Chiranian) is commonly referred to as a Designer Breed or Hybrid Breed, which is simply a mix of two purebred dogs.
A Hybrid dog differs from a mutt in that each parent is a purebred and the product of that mix will pick up characteristics
from only two breeds. With a mutt, you never really know what you are getting as it is never known how many different breeds contributed to the gene pool. A possible downside to a hybrid breed versus a purebred pooch is that you will not be guaranteed an exact look or personality. However some feel that mixed breeds tend to be healthier and have nicer personalities, I guess it is matter of individual preference. Miley, our Chipom (pictured here age 2) is an excellent mix of both breeds in looks and personality! She is quite small (10 pounds) which makes her the perfect size lapdog, quite intelligent, playful, friendly and extremely lovable.

Appearance

As there is a huge difference in the type of coat that each parent breed has, the mixed result can be varied. The coat of a Pomchi can resemble the shorter hair of a Chihuahua or when paired with a long hair Chihuahua can be closer in appearance to the Pomeranian. Virtually all colors are acceptable including merles, solids and parti-colors. The long coat is typically very fluffy and stands out from the body while the shorter coated Pomchi's have a sleek coat. Both long and short hair shed moderately year round with slightly more in the spring and summer months.

The head of the Chiranian is a rounded flattened triangular shape with a well balanced muzzle, and large round eyes. The eyes should not protrude from the face and they can be dark to lighter in color depending on the coat color and pattern. The ears are triangular and moderate in size, and stand erect when alert but also carried back and flat against the head when relaxed. The body is thicker and round and the legs are short and stocky. The tail tends to be carried high and looped over the back however it can also be carried flat.

Temperament

The Pomchi makes for a wonderful companion dog when socialized and trained properly. It is important that they are not spoiled as they may become aggressive, territorial and very demanding of their owners. These dogs have to learn that they are not the center of the household, which can be difficult because they are so darn cute and never tire of your attention! Chipom's are naturally very loving dogs that crave human contact and need to be with people they know and trust. If they are left alone too long they may show signs of separation anxiety. Proper behavior can be achieved by consistent, positive training & praise and by making the dog part of the family.
